What Is Medicare and Who Qualifies?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people aged 65 and older. It also covers certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific medical conditions. To qualify for Medicare at 65, you generally need to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who has lived in the country for at least five continuous years.

Key Eligibility Points

  • Age 65 or older

  • You or your spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years

  • You are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident for 5+ years

  • You have certain disabilities or conditions if under 65

If you meet these criteria, you can enroll in Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period, which starts three months before your 65th birthday and lasts for seven months.
